Whether it be a book, TV Programme, Film, food, place of interest or a just a self-indulgent progress report on my Blog you will find it here!

If….& …Then……

On May 15th  2013 I posted a blog post entitled An exceedingly good poet.

Today is August 16th 2013, it has taken me since then if not longer to add an addition to the famous poet Rudyard Kipling’s  words in his poem If ,  that would fit but also ring true to the rest of the poem to illicit the faithfulness, loyalty staminer and honour  of the content of the poem, yet make it apply in this century, as we can sometimes lose sight of these qualities. I have spent the last 32 years trying to instill these values into my charges, one day, as most days, it will ring true!

Pay special attention to the end of the poem if you are already familiar with it, I feel it will answer Bastet’s querie of May 15th.

And I dedicate this poem to all our Grandchildren, and hope they come, as we have, to live by it.

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

-And then again, if you’re a woman,

Then you’re day is not yet done!

From Clogs to Blogs!

Lately I have been complaining and be-moaning that there are not enough hours in the day! In particular not enough hours to devote to my blogs, which I take pleasure in writing. So with that in mind I wanted to join up a few things and prove to you the reader but most of all myself that we really have never had it so good! For instance in this day and age, some things just really flow together, with all this wonderful technology and media we can learn so much from the past, for example Channel 4’s timely appearance of the drama The Mill based on true accounts of Quarry Bank Mill Cheshire England and not so very long ago! 0fe4f9c4-6d35-4b4a-b25b-c5dacc43fc5a Click on the link to watch the trailer and recently a wonderful lady- Pamela- sent me this amazing poem which truly evokes the period too!

Clogs are black with holes for laces

clogs for work that take you places

to the pit and to the mill

down a hole or up a hill

mining coal or spinning cotton

skills that will be soon forgotten

every town had mills for cotton

every mill used many skills

docking looms

oily floors and noise that booms

miming words you could not hear

cost in hearing did prove dear

mill so hot your milk would turn

into cheese inside its churn

sterilized is what you got

if the mill was very hot

we had three mills in our village

people filed out like a spillage

workers tired, going home

to their loved ones,  some alone

clip, clip clop in clogs you’d hear them

up the street and through the gate

clip, clip clop the door is open

clip, clip clop sorry I’m late

oh! my poor feet

take my clogs off

where’s the salt and water hot

soak till soft

outcome the darners

taking out splinters

quite a lot

I’ve got Irwell in my body

I’ve got Irwell in my sole

I’ve got Irwell in my feet

where it was,  now is a hole

now they’r building 30 houses

where the heart of the village was

they knocked em down

cause they were’nt needed

houses are because, because

A Reflection on May 2013

It’s that  time of the month again, ( not THAT one  smutty brain!), the time where I reflect on my progress as a so-called writer, blogger, and poet  mmm..Wordist, mmm.. creator…. muhahaaa!

Well I dare not look at the stats page, and in  fact I need  not, for  I  already have a pretty good idea what they will say, nothing I do  not already know! – Nil Points-.

I have been AWOL, ( Absent without leave)  which  is not strictly correct either, Stay with me this is going to get complicated!

Seeing as I am the one, who I, must seek leave from, and I knew I was away  doing other things then it wasn’t  really without my knowledge or my consent, therefore I wasn’t really AWOL, but you see that is where I am wrong!

I told you it was complicated, you see, me, myself and I are the writers’ of A WORD A DAY, where we come to play, (using we in the first person is now getting quite disturbing, so grammatically correct or not I shall revert to I ) I could get all my words from a dictionary  I have several, or even the vast resources online, but a writer needs inspiration for the words to flow from the dictionary to the page and  put them in a context that is both meaningful and entertaining  not only to me but you, the reader too!

So I have been trying to combine all elements of my new life  as  a  volunteer, an activist for Grandparents and writer together, whilst at the same time looking for paid employment, not forgetting my  role as wife, mother, Step-mother, grandparent, sister and Aunt,  although I have neglected a few Nieces & Nephews  birthday’s in May  and although none of them actually read this blog,(that I know of) my wholehearted apologies and a special belated birthday wish to you all-  in particular Happy Birthday greetings to you Nephew- Brendan Baggins for yesterday!

Back to taking stock, where was I? Oh yes! Combining elements, (picture Geraldine; the nutty writer in a lab coat)  as I said one of those elements is inspiration, it is people who inspire me, the things they say and the way they say them, who they are and what they do, they make  words come alive, put thoughts into actions and create dreams that are reality, that is truly inspiring. I have met quite a few on my travels over the last month or two, you will soon be able to read all about them on the  website that Julia from Get-Experienced and I set up in May.

I spent yesterday with some lovely older people, they really made me laugh and shared  some of their wonderful sayings of times gone by and a few that are still around  and I will be sharing those with you on here and on the other website I set up in May. This site is probably the most important and the closest to my heart as I return to court in ten days  time, I will keep you posted on GP.S.U.K. (An unfortunate acronym but you get to a certain age and given the state of our NHS at the moment and it somehow fits!)

So in combining all elements and ever mindful of the  future, I  have made  a  huge decision……….drum roll please……..

I have decided to return to education, I have looked at different courses online, and their extortionate fees and their non-recognisable accreditations, I took a creative writing course a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it but what I learnt most of all  is if you want to be a writer, then just get on and write and do it  in a way that you enjoy regardless of critics, but  it also made me realise I had more to learn but in a way that suits and fits in with me  and what I want to do.

So  starting October I will begin an access  to success module to get me used to formal education again with The Open University, if that works out, I will do an Open Degree which will be tailored to what I want to achieve as a writer, including the ever elusive I.T  element, and Business Management too! I’m really excited, a little nervous but very much up to the challenge!

Back  to A word a Day and you dear reader,  I realise I should be putting out  a word a day for  you and hope you will have patience and forgive my absence occasionally, with that  I wish you joy and happy writing  and for now with your permission  I will take my leave.

Back  soon

Today is international Star Wars day or so I am reliably informed, and seeing as Yoda did feature in my post this week –DISCOMBOBULATED? YOU WILL BE! – it is only fitting that I end the week on a theme as it were, stay with me folks, all will be revealed or as the inimitable Master Yoda may say “understanding, you will be!”

For the purpose of understanding me, in this context me saying “my stars” is similar to the phrase   “Oh my days!” it is an exclamation of disbelief, yes I am trying to move on from my favoured expression of “my giddy Aunt” to the relief of my (now grown) children I guess, although I can see that this to, in turn will become annoying to them.

Any how I digress, I started this blog on the 2nd of April, so in time honoured tradition (whose? I have no idea!) As it is the beginning of the month it is time for a little reflection well self-reflection really, to see how I am going with this amazing platform, and who, why, what, where, when and how shall I go in the future?

Back to stars – the real stars are all the people who have liked, followed and commented on this blog, none of which is a family member or a person I actually know! TRULY IT IS THE WORDPRESS COMMUNITY How cool is that?

Here are a few stats because we all secretly love them (be honest you know you do)

In April

I also received a Leibster award for blogging but I’m not too sure about those things, I’m with Jennifer on that one they are a bit chain-mailish! Besides giving out lots of stuff about me in one sitting is not what I’m about, I want you to discover me through the power of the written blog! (She laughably says while writing this??)

A HUGE BIG THANK YOU TO ONE AND ALL, for your views, likes, comments, follows and great support it really is encouraging and makes the life of a writer a lot less isolating.

The wars part of blogging is finding a  true voice now that you have the platform to speak out, or rather write to your heart’s content, which most writers will know, that our hearts are never fully content, there is always more to do, more research, more to write, it is quite addictive to just get whatever you want out there with no censorship of any kind, no one to say that it’s rubbish or you must do it this way or that, it is indeed a quite liberating freedom!

Then there is the competition, making your voice stand out amongst the sea of far superior literary geniuses or should that be genii? Or COG – a collective of geniuses.

I have learnt this past month that it really does not matter it is all  about quality of content rather quantity so really I should just chill out and not get too stressed about fulfilling my blog obligation I mean A WORD A DAY is not too hard is it? It’s not like I entitled my site- a story a day- is it? So  that is what I shall stick to from now on with the odd  poem, ramblings, reviews and rants thrown in when they flow, so that I can stick to my other world commitments too such as work, volunteering and family life.

Phew! A war averted.

So Thanks again to all and may the  “WORDPRESS FORCE”  be with you which also reminds me of the biggest thank you that I almost neglected to say:

If the I.T. guys over at Word press HQ didn’t exist where would we all be? (Shudders at thought!)

What a difference a day makes!

Yesterday was beautiful at my weekend getaway the sun was shining the sky was a beautiful azure blue…………….

?????????????????????????????Photo by me!

Today however…………..

IMG_5554Photo by me

Struggling all day to come up with a poem or two,

My mood is bleak and full of stew!

I did write one but not for publication,

I best keep that one by for re-generation.

It’s raining today and my Wi-Fi is down

To say the least I’m wearing a frown!

Hopefully, and very soon

I’ll shoot once again for that distant moon!

Just a word of thanks before I go, to all those who have posted links to help me with my volunteer project   A GREAT BIG THANK YOU!  You can see them listed below :  click on their links and read some really good poetry! Oldmainer Bob Q

Well what a busy week it’s been
The likes of which unseen,
So I decided to steal another day
At my weekend getaway
Oh lucky, lucky me
To be so wild and free
To walk upon the windy beach
Sand that stings just like bleach!
Sand whirling and dancing with a forceful furore?
But I need to return to the city once more
As my poetry is not at its best
When I come away to rest
As I walk more here
Than I do all year
And my brain shuts down
As my limbs wear a frown
And wonder why they’re out of town
I end up walking like a clown
Clearly not one of my best
So much for a weekends rest!
But it’s still a poem a day
And as Scarlett would say
Tomorrow is another day!

Being Blogsessed, Sunday reflections, and a poem for Spring

English: WordPress Logo

I started my blog on WordPress when I discovered it on 2nd April this week, and I think I have stolen every spare minute since, learning how to do all the bits and bobs.

You could say I’m already “blogsessed” ( new word- meaning- obsessed with learning and writing one’s own Blog and reading others. you heard it here first folks!)

I have to say WordPress have made everything super clear too,(unlike other hosts) with lots of useful clear and step-by-step instructions,it doesn’t take long to navigate your way around.

In fact I started my Blog and have been super surfing their site ever since, finding useful hints and tips to improve my stuff.

I accepted the challenge from the gauntlet that they threw down with NaPoWriMo- National Poetry Writing Month- write a poem a day! nothing like a good focus to get the creative juices flowing, I must confess though that a couple I had composed already but most are new on a daily basis, this honesty, will probably disqualify me, but  Ho Hum!

I’ve really been delighted that complete strangers have read my stuff and “liked” it, and are even “following” my scribbles, so a simple thank you is in order.   ~ Thank You ~

Now I really must stop blogsessing, the Sunday Lunch won’t cook itself.

A traditional Sunday roast: roast beef, vegeta...

I leave  you with a new poem, composed today, Ta Ta for now from Merry cold England!

Spring is about to be sprung

The time of year I get to feel young

Waters gushing from frozen dams

Bringing forth the birthing of lambs

Meanwhile in their flower beds

Dutiful Daffodils do bow their heads

With a singular sigh of relief

Their appearance all too brief

Early birds do chirp and cheep

They rouse us from our deep sleep

Happy children laugh and play

As the sun prolongs the precious day

So out you go with a great big smile

Go on, you know it’s been awhile

Revel in natures’ glorious gift

Spring is a boost, and a welcome lift!
